Overall Job Objective

Purpose of Announcement

EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN ELIGIBILITY LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF PARKWAYS AND FUTURE VACANCIES AS THEY OCCUR.

Kind of Work

The purpose of this position is to coordinate and manage landscape installation and maintenance of rights-of-way and municipal green spaces. Employee oversees various contracts such as grass mowing, chemical spraying, ornamental maintenance, irrigation and decorative lighting. This position assists in preparation of specifications and programs related to horticultural maintenance. Assesses public rights-of-way for diseases, fungi, insects and invasive species and preparing and implementing programs to combat these issues. Assists the department's Director with the annual budget preparation. This position is considered a supervisory role and the applicant may be required to oversee work performed by the department's field workers. This position is also an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or his designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.

Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination

Must meet ONE of the following:

I. Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Agronomy, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

OR
II. Possession of an Associate's degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Agronomy, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university; plus, at least two (2) years of work experience supervising/managing landscape crews and maintaining contact with the general public in handling complaints and problems.
OR
III. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; plus, at least four (4) years of work experience supervising/managing landscape crews and maintaining contact with the general public in handling complaints and problems.

Kind of Examination

(ENTRANCE AND PROMOTIONAL)

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof.  Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing.  Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. The information is subject to verification and the Personnel Department reserves the right to determine the quality and quantity of education and experience claimed for credit.
