Under supervision of the PT, the PTA conducts prescribed physical therapy programs to assist patient participation in tasks to restore, reinforce and enhance physical performance and facilitate learning of skills essential for adaptation of an altered lifestyle. The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) is responsible for working with other health professionals in achieving goals related to meeting the individual's maximum functional abilities following a life altering illness or disability.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• The PTA demonstrates the knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide care to the pediatric, adolescent, adult, or geriatric patient in the Physical Therapy Department.
• Implements the appropriate treatment as outlined by the physical therapist, including but not limited to modalities such as exercise, heat, water, light, electricity, massage, gait, and functional training.
• Adapts conventional physical therapy techniques to meet the needs of patients unable to comprehend verbal commands or verbal commands or voluntarily carry out a regime of therapeutic exercise.
• Instructs patients in planned treatment including patient education and home programs.
EDUCATION - TRAINING - EXPERIENCE
A. Equivalent or graduate from an accredited Physical Therapy Assistant Program.
B. Licensed as a physical Therapy Assistant in the state of Louisiana.
LICENSE(S), CERTIFICATION(S), REGISTRATION(S), ACCREDITATION(S)
A. CPR Certification required within 30 days of hire
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
A. Medium to heavy work in lifting and supporting of patients.
B. Walking and standing for long periods of time.
C. Agile enough to allow for easy movement of patients during treatment.
D. May be exposed to blood and body fluids, contaminated open wounds, various flammable chemicals, adhesives and electrical equipment in providing patient care.
