Summary of Job:

The LA SPCA's busy community clinic provides low-cost veterinary wellness and other services to the Greater New Orleans area.  The diverse duties in this position guarantee the smooth operation of the clinic and the services that it provides. This role has four key areas of responsibility:

  • Scheduling and managing appointments;
  • Front of the house activities including welcoming customers and their companion animals and managing the release of animals. This also involves processing records and payments in a timely and accurate manner;
  • Working closely with clients to find out relevant information and then present animal background and medical history to the veterinarians and technicians prior to the medical consult;
  • Preparing, recording and ensuring accurate medical records for all clients and patients;

 Success Criteria & Skills Required:

  • Exceptional customer service experience and professional interpersonal skills are essential in this role. The majority of time is spent working closely with clients, welcoming them to the clinic, being an ambassador for the LA SPCA, answering incoming calls, informing clients of services and fees and answering any questions;
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills are essential for this fast-paced environment with multiple appointments and services. This requires daily monitoring of the appointment scheduling mix to ensure a suitable number of clients for the appropriate services;
  • Cash handling experience and attention to detail is required to check out as well as balancing and submitting daily deposits and generating daily financial reconciliation reports;
  • Retail sales experience is preferred as this role will explain and offer veterinary retail products to clients including discounts and special grant expenditures;
  • Energetic and positive approach when accompanying clients and animals to wellness consults; Excellent questioning and listening skills are required so that relevant information can be obtained and relayed to the veterinary staff;
  • At all times treat all animals humanely, professionally, and with compassion, regardless of the situation or circumstance;
  • Work courteously and cooperatively with other staff members and volunteers;
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all cases and LA/SPCA information;

Education, Skills & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 2+ years professional experience in a veterinary clinic, shelter or comparable setting
  • Must be computer savvy and be able to learn multiple software programs quickly
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish preferred

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and pre-employment substance screening
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts starting as early as 7:00 am and ending as late as 7:00 pm including Saturdays

 Physical Requirements:

  • Should not be allergic to animals; must be able to work around all animals
  • Must be able to work with industrial strength cleaners and disinfectants and sweep and mop
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, push and pull heavy objects, bend, twist, reach
  • Able to perform strenuous physical activities including frequent walking, standing, bending and stooping

 Working Environment (or Working Conditions):

  • Potentially subject to animal bites and scratches
  • Works in an area with a high noise level
